February 2 is Take Your Child To The Library Day, and it felt like the perfect holiday to celebrate after yesterday's Read Aloud Day. I can't think of a better way to celebrate this holiday then signing a child up to get their first library card, so that's what we did!
Jude and I go to the library a lot. The Hamilton County Library system is amazing, and it has 3 branches that are within 10 minutes of our house. Two of them do weekly baby story time which we have been attending since Jude was a month old! We spend a lot of our time singing songs that we learned at baby story time!
Despite going to the library weekly, Jude didn't have his own library card, so we signed him up for one. The process is easy, and our library offers an under 18 card that is limited in check-outs but doesn't accrue late fees.
After we signed up, we let Jude look through some of the books and pick a couple. We try to read a lot of books at home, so as soon as he grabbed one, he opened it up to start "reading" it. It warmed my used to be English teacher heart.
We sat him down and let him leaf through couple books. He spent time studying the pictures and playing with the corners of book. We read one to him, and we will be reading the rest throughout the week! We picked out five books: Woke Baby by Mahogany L. Browne, I'm Wild About You! by Sandra Magsamen, Growl! Growl! by Sebastien Braun, Special You by Jonny Lambert, and Baby's First Book of Birds & Colors by Phyllis Limbacher Tildes.
One of my biggest concerns with Jude having a library card is making sure that Jude's library books stay safe and that we avoid mixing them into the books we already own. My solution to this is a wooden dish rack. I had bought a pack of 2 on amazon to organize his Way to Play track, so I used the extra one to create a book display that will be used exclusively for his library books. They are currently being housed on the shelf in the baby corner in the playroom. This not only will keep the books safe and put aside, but it will also make sure that we utilize those books while we have them!
We hope you take the time this month (Library Lovers' Month!) to head out to your local library and enjoy all they have to offer!
