August 21 is Poets day. We left Ohio at 3AM to head to our first stop in Florida, so we were limited to activities that can be done in a car.

We started by making up our own poems. Jude would grab toys and I would improvise rhyming lines of poetry. I have no idea what the final poem was but it definitely involved a doll going to a mall. This would have  been a great activity for Bad Poetry Day. If Jude was older, I would encourage him to make his own rhymes by offering him object pairs that already rhyme.

We finished up by reading Shel Silverstein. We read quite a few, but I’ll leave you with my favorite.

Invitation by Shel Silverstein
If you are a dreamer, come in,
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar
A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer...
If you’re a pretender, come sit by my fire
For we have some flax-golden tales to spin.
Come in!
Come in!
